Apparently, my curiosity begins with the double-breasted suits, that were in the movie called The Kingsman which was released in January 2014, the protagonist of the movie Harry Hart (Colin Firth) is wearing a pinstripe double-breasted suit with six on-two buttoning style, and I get more inspiration from some classic menswear enthusiasts as well.

Indeed, the style of double-breasted weather might be a suit, waistcoat, blazer, dinner jacket, odd jacket, or overcoat, it would create a unique and classy look to the garment.

However, in this article, I would like to share with you some of my opinions and knowledge about the double-breasted suit jacket/ odd jacket and the way of styling

First of all, why is it called double-breasted?

The style of double-breasted whether it could be a suit, waistcoat, blazer, dinner jacket, or odd jacket, is defined by its unique characteristic which is having the overlapping front flaps (the left lapel over the right lapel) with the buttons on each side of the garment.

Apparently, the style of double-breasted suit jackets and coats was inspired by the 18th-century reefer jacket which is worn by the British Navy officers while they sailing on the ship, although the double-breasted jackets have various types as well; it is defined by the distinctive buttoning points such as

Six-on-one double-breasted jacket

You may think what is six on one! as I said earlier it's defined by the distinctive buttoning points the first number six is mentioning the total number of buttons on the front flaps of the jacket (beneath the right and left lapel of the jacket) and the second number is mentioning the working buttons on the jacket because other buttons are meant to be the ornamental purpose,

Hence, let us begin with the six-on-one double-breasted jacket, have six buttons with one functional button which creates an excellent and great V shape on the coat to elongate your torso vertically. And is relatively a bit more relaxed and casual, also is a perfect choice for your semi-formal attire; it gives you an elegant and dapper look as well

Six on two double-breasted jacket

If we look at the six on two; the double-breasted jacket also has six buttons yet with two functional buttons and it creates a conservative appearance also it's appropriate for every formal occasion

Four on two double-breasted jacket

Indeed, as you guess, it has four buttons with two functional buttons on the jacket. It's classic and exuberantly stylish, ideal for your casual look as well as maintaining the formality of your outfit

Eventually, I would like to share with you some other distinctive characteristics of the double-breasted suit jacket and the odd jacket which is the lapels are always peaked with beautiful Milanese buttonhole (boutonniere), and it would fit well with any type of man whether they might be short, long, stout, slim or masculine, the fact is the garment should be meticulously measured and well-cut according to the structure of your body shape, otherwise, it would never fit well to your body, that's why it's hard to find the double-breasted suit and odd jacket in the ready to wear shop.

Therefore, gentlemen if you would like to wear a double-breasted suit or odd jacket then you should find out your tailor (made to measure or bespoke)

Cheers gentlemen,
